Wheelchair Clinic
233 Carew Street, Springfield, MA 01104
413-748-6830

When an individual relies on a wheelchair for mobility, the proper fit is essential for comfort, health, and maximum independence. Appropriate wheelchair positioning with an individualized seating system can prevent complications such as pressure sores, slow further loss of mobility, minimize pain and maximize function.

The Occupational and Physical therapists at Weldon’s Wheelchair Clinic have advanced training in this practice area, including Assistive Technology Providers (ATP) certification.

Evaluation in the Wheelchair Clinic includes:

  • Physical assessment for range of motion, skin integrity, sensation, tone, posture, pain, transfer ability and endurance.
  • Establishing goals and needs of the equipment user.
  • Assessment of current and previous equipment.
  • Consideration of environments in which the equipment will be used including home, work, and school.

Following the evaluation the therapist, working closely with an equipment vendor, will recommend a wheelchair seating system which may include specialized support cushions, backrests, headrests, and/or trunk, arm, and leg supports. A variety of manual and power wheelchairs or scooter may be available for trial.

Whether your goal is to safely navigate the grocery store or to live comfortably at home, the staff can recommend the best mobility device for your needs.
